This edition is limited to four hundred and fifty copies, of which four hundred and thirty are for sale in Great Britain and Ireland and twenty are for presentation Number. . . . [with signatures of Drinkwater and Rutherston below.]
[1-7]4 (2 leaves inserted after [1]3, frontispiece and protective tissue), then [8-17] are made of single wove leaves sewn as 4-leaf sections, with plates printed on their rectos, linen guards forming the joints, and protective bank paper tissues for each plate, tipped in: one at the centre of each section, one conjugate pair around the inner pair of plates, and another around the outer pair of plates; this results in an alternation of 9-leaf and 7-leaf sections — [8, 10, 12, 14, 16]9, [9, 11, 13, 15]7 each protective tissue bearing number and caption (printed red) of the plate following; the final tissue of a 9-leaf section thus protects the plate on the first recto of the next section (7-leaf) — and finally [17]6, having only 6 leaves as [17]4 bears no plate and needs no tissue to protect it.
Sections [1, 2] un-paged, then: [1] 2-16 [17] 18-23 [24-5] 26-39 [40], then sections [8-17] un-paged.
Imperial 4o: 13⅛" × 10" (see note below), trimmed, top edge only trimmed and gilt, white wove, no mark, white wove protective bank paper tissues printed in red with captions of plates beneath; [10]4r is of a different bank paper, heavier and more opaque; 14pt. Imprint with 4-line dropped initials; collotypes, 8 in colour, 18 monochrome, and 13pp. line blocks. Frontispiece on insert in [1] and plates on rectos of wove leaves in [8-17]; casing, boards black buckram, gold-blocked up spine: ‘CLAUD LOVAT FRASER’; printed dust-jacket.
Claud Lovat Fraser died 18/Jun/1921; this memorial volume was written by Drinkwater and Rutherston, his close friends; see Simon 1956 p.79 and also Gilmour 1977 p.43.
Simon Simon 1973 p.238: Catalogue raisonné describes this edition as royal 4o, priced 6 guineas (£6, 6s.).
One of the books shown in J. Curwen & Sons Centenary Exhibition 1963 (see Ab7) in Bloomsbury.
B.L. copy numbered 445, has all its plates; Curwen Library copy (un-numbered) lacked plates 1, 12,17, 21, so leaves [8]2r, [10]4r, [12]2r, [13]1r were blank (though the numbers and captions of these plates had been printed on the preceding tissue leaves) and only 2 leaves of tissue are tipped in to section [17]; either Curwen retained for their Library a defective copy, or these 4 plates were removed after the copy was added to the Curwen Library.
Collotypes probably printed by Charles Whittingham and Griggs.
