Technical description

8⅞" × 5⅜", white laid, Arches all edges untrimmed; ??6pt. Baskerville; hand-coloured stencilled frontispiece done by Curwen Press; see Simon 1973, p.217; casing, spine black buckram, gold-blocked: ‘PETER | PORCU- | PINE | * | COBBETT’, boards combed marbled paper.

Notes

Peter Porcupine was a nom-de-plume adopted by William Cobbett in 1796.

G. D. H. Cole's authorship of the Introduction (pp.1-8) and notes (pp.151-163) is shown on A1r, Contents (π4r) and p.8.

Not in Curwen Library or 1963 handlist; added at the suggestion of Pat Gilmour and Douglas Ball.

Shown at the Zwemmer Gallery 1930 (see Mzi).

See Dreyfus 1981 cat. 41 who says 650 copies were for Random House, New York, and confirms Cole wrote the Introduction and Notes.
