Technical description

Small Demy 4o: 10½" × 8", yop edge only trimmed, white wove, VGZ Holland; 24pt. Lutetia; line block decorations; aquatint illustrations on inserts and on text pages; casing, cloth, white and yellow, spine printed in red: ‘THE | DIARY | OF A | MADMAN | * | GOGOL’, and on upper cover: ‘THE DIARY | OF A MADMAN | CRESSET PRESS’.

Technical description

As Lh but top edge gilt, white wove, F J Head & Co; type and illustrations as Lh; 21 proofs of the aquatints with protecting tissues are in a pocket inside the lower board; pocket is built up to appear like the ordinary leaves of the book when closed; half leather binding on 3 cords, solid gilt, parchment sides, leather spine label gold-blocked: ‘[3 fillets] | THE | DIARY | OF A | MADMAN | [2 fillets] | GOGOL | [3 fillets]’.
