Lutetia Monotype, with red decorative dropped initials; [R-S] and inserts in [A] and C have collotype illustrations on same paper as text, each protected with a tissue leaf bearing caption in red; [R] is two pairs made up of single leaves, one fixed to the stub of the other, with conjugate pairs of tissue around section, between, and single leaf in centre; [S] has three pairs made up similarly, except that pair in centre is joined by linen guard, and conjugate pair of tissue around this centre pair, with single leaves of tissue in centre and before second leaf. (these two "sections", like other inserts, not included in paging); casing, red buckram, spine gold-blocked: ‘THE | LEGION | BOOK’.

The Legion Book was sold under the auspices of Edward Prince of Wales to raise money after the First World War for the British Legion (founded 1921); among the contributing writers were G. K. Chesterton, Winston S. Churchill, and Rudyard Kipling.

Oliver Simon, Catalogue raisonné reprinted Simon 1973 p.247-10 describes this edition as bound in full vellumized pigskin, 100 copies held by the Prince of Wales; the abridged edition of 600 copies on mould-made paper was privately published by the British Legion.

B.L. copy at File 548 has slip case covered in grey wove paper, with label, describing it as the Edition de luxe, 5 guineas.

Of the limited edition 100 copies were signed by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII. the 4th impression see Lna, published by Cassells during 1929 was, I believe, the first 'trade' edition.

I examined in 1963 at Curwen Press a mock-up with colophon different from Ln, indicating hand-made paper by J B Green, binding design by Charles Ricketts, R.A., a different engraving on t.p.: ‘a trooper mounted,’ by Stephen Gooden instead of the Flanders poppy;  all contributors signed their names after the dedication page.  I believed this mock-up was made for a special copy presented to King George V. The Librarian, Windsor Castle, confirms this, supplying the following details: Presentation copies were made for King George V and Queen Mary; both are now in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. Both copies were autographed by all the contributors after the Dedication page addressed to Prince Edward, and identically bound by Wood, London, in pigskin (originally white) elaborately tooled in gold and blind.
