Technical description

Crown 8o: 7½" × 4½", trimmed, top edge gilt, artificial headband, white laid, no mark; 12pt. Bembo; casing, blue buckram, spine gold-blocked: ‘[3 fillets at head and tail] SARTOR | RESARTUS | BY | THOMAS | CARLYLE | [chevron of 3 fillets pointing down] | [star, 4-pointed, with rays] | [chevron as above but upwards] | 1931’, and upper cover, 3 fillets all round, and in cantre: sun with rays, and clouds encircling, lower cover: 3 fillets all round ‘.
