Notes

A long story written in April-May 1929; published in instalments in 1930 and in 1931; published in this limited edition by Cassell in 1931, then with 'Dream of Destiny' in 1932; see Hepburn (1981) p.116-7.

For hand-stencilling in transparent water-colour see Simon (1956) p.86 note; see Simon (1973) p.211-217, and 210 on this book's re-setting; Gilmour (private letter) confirms the key in this book was printed lithographically; this was the last book Kauffer made at Curwen Press; see Gilmour (1977) pp.78-79; see Flower Flower (1956) p.38 who says Kauffer made three attempts at the illustrations.

Catalogue raisonné Simon (1973) p.251 says this edition was of 350 copies, priced 5 guineas (£5 5s.); N.B. despite the t.p. there are 11, not 12, drawings.
