John was born on St. Patrick's day (March 17th) 1920, A.E.
B.L. catalogue states this is 1 of 80 copies; the note on the front endleaf explains the author's middle name 'Patrick' and is initialled by his father Albert Ehrman, who ran the family diamond broking business. His son became an academic historian, writing a 3-part biography of the younger Pitt, studies of the Second World War, and of the development of the atomic bomb; this volume must have been printed (1938) to commemorate the author's 18th birthday; it was not legal deposit, being privately published. The B.L. copy is stamped 30/Jan/1986 in red, showing that it was purchased by the Library. It was in 1985 that Professor Ehrman retired from chairing the Advisory Committee of the British Library. I wish to thank the Corporate Archive for their help.
