Technical description

Demy 8o: 8½" × 5½", trimmed, white wove, no mark; 12(+2)pt. Baskerville; line block and halftone illustrations; colour halftone on insert; casing, pale grey cloth, blocked in black on spine: ‘THE SILENT | TRAVELLER | IN | WAR TIME | by | CHIANG | YEE | [2 Chinese characters follow, reading downwards 'Chiang Yee'] | COUNTRY | LIFE’, and on upper cover near fore-edge: ‘[2 vertical lines of Chinese, the left as on spine, the right as on title-page but downwards]’.

Notes

Chiang Yee the author (b.1903, d.1977) graduated from Nanjing University, moved to England, and wrote and illustrated the Silent Traveller series of books.

The Chinese characters, right to left, mean 'war time small account'.

Curwen library copy lacks publisher's casing.
