Technical description

Crown 8o: 7¼" × 4¼", trimmed, top edge dark brown, white wove, no mark, 2A-2F and inserts in [A] are of white loaded paper; 11(+1)pt. Bembo; halftones on white loaded paper sections, including colour halftones in [A]; casing, yellow cloth with brown, gold, and blind blocking: blind around borders of upper and lower covers, and 9 fillets on spine; brown, a design of flowers on upper cover, similar design reversed right to left on lower cover, design of printer's flowers repeated 5 times on spine, and 2" deep panel on spine; and gold blocking on upper cover: ‘EDMOND & JULES DE GONCOURT | [then below brown design] | FRENCH | XVIII CENTURY | PAINTERS’ and lower cover: ‘ANNO MCMXLVIII | [then below brown design] | PHAIDON PRESS’, and on spine brown panel: ‘FRENCH | XVIII | CENTURY | PAINTERS | EDMOND AND | JULES | DE GONCOURT’; printed dust-jacket.
