One thousand two hundred and fifty copies of | this edition of St Mark's Gospel have been | printed at The Curwen Press, London, E 13, on | Arnold and Foster's Grey Mould-made, and | bound there for Allen and Richard Lane for | Christmas 1951. The decorations were en- | graved on wood by Reynolds Stone and the type | is Monotype Ehrhardt. Passages from the First | and Fourth Chapters of the Gospel were repro- | duced on the endpapers from the Clarendon | Press facsimile edition of Codex Sinaiticus, now | in the British Museum. The rendering by Dr. | E. V. Rieu is from his translation of the Four | Gospels, shortly to be published.

Technical description

Royal 8o: 9" × 5½", trimmed, grey laid, no mark; 12(+3)pt. Ehrhardt; red-brown line blocks for chapter numbers, and other decorations; casing, crushed canvas of indeterminate colour, with terra-cotta colour cloth labels on spine and upper cover, gold-blocked, up spine: ‘[within ruled border] ST MARK'S GOSPEL’, and on upper cover: ‘[within ruled border, a block of a winged lion]’; tissue dust-jacket.

Note

The Four Gospels: a new translation by E. V. Rieu, was first published 1952, with wood-engravings by Reynolds Stone.
