[1st line in red] THE SHELL BOOK OF SEA CHANTIES There was a saying in the days of sail that 'A song is worth ten men on a rope'. Chanties were not sung in exuberance, but to co-ordinate the efforts of mere handfuls of men who worked sailing ships by heaving, hoisting, pushing and straining in muscle-cracking labour. There used to be a taboo against singing work songs off watch, but times have changed. The sea chanties and songs in this book have been collected and are here presented with the intention of helping you to while away some happy hours of leisure. [colour halftone block: the Shell trademark inside a ship's wheel] [last 2 lines in red] Sea chanties in this book and most of the illustrations have appeared previously in a well-received series of advertisements for Shell World-wide Bunkering Service.
