Notes

Contains only the text of the short story so titled; see Hepburn (1981) p.106; not to be confused with the collected volume of short stories published by Cassell in 1924 under the same title; see Hepburn (1981) p.97; Bennett's contract for the 1929 limited edition Lj and Lja was for half-profit; According to Webb & Skipwith (2009) p.26 this book was the highlight of an exhibition 'Stencilling from the Curwen Press' at Zwemmers in 1931.

For use of Baskerville in text and Walbaum for display, see Simon (1956) p.46; this book combines opaque gouache colour stencilling with lithography, see Simon (1956) p.86, confirmed by Pat Gilmour in private letter; comments by Kauffer, see Simon (1973) p.215 and 248. For stencil process see Simon (1956) p. 86, Curwen (1934) pp.35-39 and Simon (1973) pp.211-7 and 248.

Catalogue raisonné 1928-30 says this book was priced 2 guineas (£2 2.s) in full cloth; Barbara Phillips's copy numbered 355, lacks slip-case.

One of the books shown in J. Curwen & Sons Centenary Exhibition 1963 (see Ab7) in Bloomsbury.
